HOW TO MEASURE FOR PLANTATION SHUTTERS

Prepare Before You Measure

Measure each window separately, even when openings look identical. Record every result in millimetres and add clear photos of handles, tiles, sills and obstructions.

STEP 01

Measure the Width Three Times

Measure horizontally inside the opening at the top, centre and bottom.

  • For an inside mount, record the smallest width.
  • For an outside mount, record the exact intended frame coverage.
  • Note skirting, tiles or architraves that affect the frame.

STEP 02

Measure the Height Three Times

Measure vertically at the left, centre and right of the opening.

  • For an inside mount, record the smallest height.
  • Identify whether a sill or floor forms the bottom edge.
  • Measure to the finished surface—not a removable trim.
STEP 03

Check Both Diagonals

Measure corner to corner in both directions. A noticeable difference means the opening may be out of square and needs technical review.

  • Record both diagonal measurements.
  • Photograph visibly uneven corners.
  • Do not compensate by changing your width or height.

STEP 04

Choose the Mounting Position

An inside mount sits within the recess. An outside mount covers the opening or fixes to the architrave or wall face.

  • Check recess depth for the selected frame and louvre.
  • Look for locks, handles, winders, alarm sensors and flyscreens.
  • Confirm the fixing surface is flat and structurally suitable.

Midrails & T-posts

Measure from the bottom of the opening to any window rail or feature that should align. Record every T-post centre from the far-left edge.

Corner, Bay & Door Openings

Record the angle, adjacent widths, handles, floor clearances and panel stacking space. These projects always receive a technical review.

Shapes & Arches

Provide full width, full height, spring line and clear photographs. A drawing or physical template may be required before manufacture.
